Stockbridge, MA – January 30, 2018 – The Erikson Institute of the Austen Riggs Center is pleased to announce the upcoming Friday Night Guest Lecture:
- “Psychoanalytic Research on Causes and Prevention of Violence: From Individual to Social, Political, and Economic” with James Gilligan, MD: Friday, February 2, from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
In this lecture, Dr. Gilligan will summarize lessons learned from 50 years of working with the most violent men in our society, as well as the most violent members of other nations, about the causes and prevention of violence–including homicide and suicide, mass and multiple murders, and war crimes and genocide. He will emphasize the centrality of shame and humiliation, and the absence of guilt feelings as among the psychological forces causing violence. He will also address the various means of protecting people from those stressors that cause violence.
James Gilligan, PhD has been a psychiatrist on the faculty of New York University since 2002. Prior to that he was a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard University for more than 30 years. Throughout his career, in addition to maintaining a private practice in general adult psychiatry, he has specialized in the study of violence as a problem in public health, preventive medicine, and psychiatry by investigating the causes and prevention of violent behavior. He is the author of Violence: Reflections on a National Epidemic (Vintage, 1997); Preventing Violence: Prospects for Tomorrow (Thames & Hudson, 2001); and Why Some Politicians Are More Dangerous than Others (Polity, 2003).
This presentation is designed for mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers, and is held in the large conference room of the Medical Office Building at the Austen Riggs Center, located at 25 Main Street in Stockbridge, MA.
