Stockbridge, MA – March 20, 2018 – The Erikson Institute of the Austen Riggs Center is pleased to announce the upcoming Friday Night Guest Lecture:

In this lecture, Mr. Hansbury will address transphobic countertransferences – the unsettling, often negative, reactions that clinicians sometimes have when working with transgender patients. He will look at how these moments of anxiety in the psychoanalyst have been revealed through a century of literature on working with transgender patients, from Freud's applied analysis on the case of Schreber to today's relational trans-affirmative psychoanalysts. Through this work, Mr. Hansbury identifies and describes four basic "unthinkable anxieties" that appear to underlie transphobic countertransference reactions, concluding that a relational approach, with a focus on mentalization, can be a compassionate and transformative one for working with many trans patients.

Griffin Hansbury, MA, LCSW-R, is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City. He speaks and writes frequently on transgender issues and has published in several peer-reviewed journals, including Psychoanalytic Dialogues, Studies in Gender and Sexuality, and the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health. He co-authored the LGBT chapter, “Working Relationally with LGBT Clients in Clinical Practice: Client and Clinician in Context,” in the textbook, Relational Social Work Practice with Diverse Populations (Springer, 2014). He has trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and is certified in Imago Therapy. In 2015 he received the Ralph Roughton Paper Award from the American Psychoanalytic Association.

This presentation is designed for mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers, with no registration fee, and is held in the large conference room of the Medical Office Building at the Austen Riggs Center, located at 25 Main Street in Stockbridge, MA. Continuing education credits will be offered.
