Stockbridge, MA – April 3, 2018 – The Erikson Institute of the Austen Riggs Center is pleased to announce the upcoming Yasmin Roberts Memorial Friday Night Guest Lecture:
- “Under the Skin: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Body Modification” with Alessandra Lemma, MPhil, DClin Psych: Friday, April 6, from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
In this lecture, Dr. Lemma will introduce participants to key psychoanalytic ideas about the body and the experience of embodiment through an application to particular areas that draw on her clinical experience and research. Specifically, she will address the unconscious phantasies that drive people to compulsively modify their bodies through cosmetic surgery, piercings, and tattoos.
Alessandra Lemma, MPhil, DClin Psych, is a fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and a consultant clinical psychologist at the Anna Freud Center for Children and Families. She is an honorary professor of psychological therapies at the School of Health and Human therapies at Essex University and a visiting professor in the Psychoanalysis Unit at University College London where she is also the clinical director of the Psychological Interventions Research Centre. She is a visiting professor of the Istituto Winnicott at Sapienzo University of Rome and “Centro Winnicott,” Rome. She is the editor of the New Library of Psychoanalysis book series (Routledge) and one of the regional editors for the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. She has published extensively on psychoanalysis, the body, and trauma.
This presentation is designed for mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers, with no regular registration fee, and is held in the large conference room of the Medical Office Building at the Austen Riggs Center, located at 25 Main Street in Stockbridge, MA. Continuing education credits will be offered.
